The Silent World (bahasa Prancis: Le Monde du silence) adalah film dokumenter Prancis tahun 1956 yang disutradarai oleh oseanografer ternama Prancis, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, dan Louis Malle saat masih muda. The Silent World dikenal sebagai salah satu film pertama yang menggunakan sinematografi bawah air untuk menampilkan kedalaman lautan dalam film berwarna.^[1]^[2] Judulnya diambil dari buku Cousteau tahun 1953, The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure. Film ini dirilis di Amerika Serikat oleh Columbia Pictures.

Film ini direkam di atas kapal Calypso. Cousteau dan tim penyelamnya merekam 25 kilometer film selama lebih dari dua tahun di Laut Mediterania, Teluk Persia, Laut Merah, dan Samudra Hindia. 2,5 kilometer di antaranya masuk penyuntingan akhir filmnya.

Film ini kemudian menuai kritik karena proses produksinya menyebabkan kerusakan lingkungan. Dalam satu adegan, awak Calypso membantai sekelompok hiu yang berenang menuju bangkai bayi paus. Bayi paus itu sendiri terlukai secara fatal dan tidak sengaja oleh awak kapal (Cousteau menahkodai kapal ke sekelompok paus supaya bisa mengambil gambar lebih dekat, tetapi menabrak satu paus sebelum bayinya terluka oleh baling-baling kapal.) Selain itu, Cousteau menggunakan dinamit dekat terumbu karang agar bisa mengamati seluruh kehidupan laut di dekatnya. Cousteau kemudian semakin sadar lingkungan, terlibat dalam pelestarian laut, dan bahkan dijuluki "bapak gerakan lingkungan" oleh Ted Turner.^[3]

The Silent World adalah film dokumenter Cousteau pertama yang memenangi Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; World Without Sun juga menang pada tahun 1964. Film ini juga dianugerahi Palme d'Or di Festival Film Cannes 1956^[4] dan menjadi satu-satunya film dokumenter dengan anugerah tersebut sebelum Fahrenheit 9/11 besutan Michael Moore dianugerahi pada tahun 2004.
